P&B's Harlequin

So, there's a new cartoon series for those who live in a world without heroes...

Since this country's definition of 'Hero' has been warped by movies like Rambo to mean 'the psychopath who kills people we don't like,' Harley Quinn makes the perfect hero.

Of course, for her to be the hero and to work as a series, it's going to have to be an ugly world. They establish this quickly in her introduction, along with a solid hint of the blood and violence to follow...

Oh, yeah...  did i mention the language? This isn't Batman The Animated Series (where Harley got her start).

There are stark differences...

...to wit...

By yon by - one of the delights of the show for me is hearing Diedrich Bader back in the role of Batman...

And we've got Alan Tudyk as Joker -

Add some lovely sets, including a B.S. inspired Joker's Lair...

Toss it all with a smattering of explosions and a bucket brigade of blood filled dark humor along with a side of personal revelation and by the end of the first episode...

Yeah, i think i might give the show a look and see what happens.

But i'm a twisted old f  k.

BTW - I personally find it interesting to note who gets a creator's credit -

Harley Quinn created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm
Oh, yeah - anybody who loved Batman The Animated Series and all that's flowed forth from it loves their work. (Actually, i've been a fan of Timm's work since Whisper)

...Batman created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger.
About damn time that the Kane family relented to allow a more truthful credit. They've been doing nothing but adding shame to the Kane family name for years.

...and Killer Croc? Interesting. Created by Gerry Conway and Don Newton.
Well, you know we love Don Newton around here. Somehow, despite a fairly amazing body of work as both writer and editor, we haven't visited with Conway as yet. (Even more surprising since i was a big Mack Bolan fan, too) I wonder if they got a creator's credit due to when Killer Croc was created, or if it was keyed to Conway's contract if he was editing at the time?

Either way, it's cool to see their names up there.

Grizzly Bear Escape From Savage Island Stalked By Sex-Starved Voodoo Girls!

One thing that my Comics Archeology expeditions can frequently generate is odd looks. When i start pulling out old fanzines, APAs and garage press publications, hand printed and stapled together, the looks start. Especially when the title is something like Man's Guts.

Friends, acquaintances, and strangers alike respond in the same way - "Dude! WTF?" (Yes, i spent a lot of time frequenting conventions and shops in California) "Why are you even looking at that crap? And, seriously - that title? What kind of pervo are you?"

Well, skipping past trying to categorize or classify, i'll merely acknowledge without labels and move on to the primary question. My answer is typically along the lines of "I've never seen it before, don't know what it is. It's got drawings and it's cheap."

Seriously, that's more than reason enough. Sure, plenty of it turns out to be crap - that's to be expected as per Sturgeon's Revelation. But then you mine those little gems that so vastly tip the balance and make it very worthwhile. By this point, you've probably figured that this is one of those occasions. Let's look at the table of contents and see what we've got here:

Kamikaze Nudes of the Secret Pacific Empire?
Lesbian Mudwrestlers Behind Bars?
Bayou Kingdom of Undead Cuties?!?
Okay, maybe the titles are a bit misleading for the intent of the zine, hm? Let's listen to what the Editor has to say for the introduction to this new publication:

I included the North Carolina address as a point of reference, in case you were inclined to debate how heartfelt the editorial might or might not be.

As for overall quality, in these pre-computer days of xerox or mimeograph printing, options were quite limited for an amateur press. Mimeographs allows no photographs, and any images were typically hand drawn - backwards. So it's no surprise that the book's text is strictly two column type-written pages...

So - what the frell are we doing here?

I don't know if you clicked for the bigger view of that cover above, but let's take a closer look now...

That's Bruce By God Timm's signature hiding there.
I've been a big fan of his work since a few years before this, when he and Neal Hansen (Spyder) were working together on Whisper. But you're far more likely to be familiar with him from his style setting design work on the Batman cartoons...

...sorry. I meant the Batman Animated shows...

...and the follow-up Superman animated series...

Oops. Pardon us, Lois.
Obviously, there's a Blue Monday feature on Timm down the road a piece, as likely implied on our previous peeks at his Naughty And Nice side. But today, we not only get a Bruce Timm cover, we also get a full page illustration for each story!

And that, fellowbabies, is why i dig through those unknown piles so eagerly while others are trying to find what they already know is there.

Jack & Blue

We interrupt the King Kirby 100 for the return of

We're keeping with our Jack Kirby theme this month, but the KK100 tries to be Safe For Work, but not all of The King's fans have the same intent. Nor does this blog, for that matter - but you clicked on the Adult Warning, so you already know that.

So today, let's look at a few of Jack's characters as drawn by other artists, like Dave Cockrum, John Byrne, Joe Rubenstein, Adam Hughes, Frank Cho, and Bruce Timm.
One of the most popular Kirby characters for nude/erotic sketches is the Scarlet Witch. One can only imagine that popularity will increase with the current Avengers movies.

NOTE: The images from this post contain nudity, and thus have been moved to our back room for adult content. The text remains that you may make a fair guess as to whether or not you wish to look at the pics.

Close behind, perhaps not surprisingly given the amount of cheesecake inherent in her comic book role as Mister Miracle's stage assistant, is Big Barda. Her warrior side has inspired entire 'muscle porn' fan groups. Those two contrasts offer an intriguing combination to many artists and fans...

The Wasp, of course, has lot of fans and can inspire a fair bit of fetish oriented artwork. Her appearance in the recent Avengers cartoon series open another fan base and style of artwork. We'll see more of her next week, but here's a nice study of her for now...

Kirby's biggest stars are often more popular in cartoons:

To wrap things up for this batch, here's one of my favorite cartoons of the type:
